RIM said thanks, but no thanks, to Windows Phone
Reuters reports what we kind of knew back in Dec, that Microsoft boss, Steve Ballmer approached RIM about making a Nokia-fashion bargain to scrap its own operating system in favor of adopting Windows Phone. Different Nokia, however, RIM decided it would sink or swim on its own, failing an infusion of cash from Microsoft, in substitution for a stake in the company. During a conference call yesterday, RIM CEO, Thorsten Heins, shot downwards the idea of moving to another visitor'due south Bone, exist it Android or Windows Phone:
"Nosotros came to the decision that joining the family of the Android players, for example, would not fit RIM'due south strategy and its customers," he said. "We are non trying to be one of many. We're trying to exist different. Nosotros're trying to be the all-time solution for our customers that purchase a BlackBerry, know why they want a BlackBerry. And we're aiming for nothing less than beingness a viable, successful, mobile calculating platform of the hereafter. This is what we're aiming at. And I recollect that's the difference. If yous compare usa with others, did nosotros take the hard road? Absolutely. Absolutely. But having washed this and building and completing this new mobile calculating platform that then expresses itself as a smartphone or as a tablet or as a vertical application or embedded in cars, whatsoever you want to do, that is where we will take BlackBerry. And this is – that'south why it was admittedly required and necessary to build its own platform. I would argue the other mode around. If I continue to rely on somebody else's Bone and somebody else'due south platform, would that allow me in the long run to really differentiate towards my customers and provide them the services and the environs that they request from me and that they would like to have? I take a big question mark around this. Then I think going this way and edifice the platform we are building has the absolute intent to serve our customers and our markets amend than on a standard-based Os and platform."
Cheers to RIM for standing their ground. Sadly, integrity doesn't ever translate into success. Yesterday saw them reporting a large loss for Q1. In addition, they announced that their latest operating organisation, BlackBerry x, will not see the calorie-free of mean solar day until Q1 of 2022. Their struggles have also led to the decision to cut most 30% of their workforce, about 5000 jobs, in guild to salve money. Read more at Crackberry.com.
